Car locks do wear out over time and must be changed. Because it is subjected to so much more wear and tears, the locks on the driver's door will almost probably fail first. Installing a car's door lock is a simple but time taking process. You don't even need any prior professional automotive locksmith working experience to complete this task.
Installing Car Door Locks: Steps-By-Step Guide
During normal operations, your cat lock door is exposed to cold weather and gusts. Dirt and water can sometimes get inside the lock, corroding the tumbler. Due to the insertion of the key, the essential tumbler will wear out completely, causing it to stop operating forever. However, let’s take a look at how Car Lock Installation can be done by yourself.
Remove Door Panel
Locate the screws around the perimeter of the inside of the driver door panel by opening the automobile door. Remove the screws with the screwdriver and look inside the armrest for the ones that are missing. Remove these screws as well, then look inside the armrest for the cover. Remove it, as well as the speakers in the door, next. Move the ignition key and fully raise the window if the vehicle has electric windows. Remove the door panel after turning off the ignition. This will give you access to the back of the door lock, which will allow you to remove it.
Take Off The Plastic Liner
Your automobile door most likely includes a plastic inner liner that prevents water from entering the door's inside. Remove the lining from the door by carefully peeling it away. You may glue it back into place once you've made your repair.
Remove The Door And Lock Control Rods
Locate the car door primary handle control rod and unclip it while utilizing the inner door access. The handle was rendered inoperable due to a broken clip, which will be repaired as part of this repair. Locate the lock control rod and unclip it from the lock arm with a long pick or screwdriver by pulling the clip downward away from the control rod.
Unbolt Outer Handle
Remove the inner car door lock handle’ mounting bolts with a 10mm socket or wrench by twisting them counterclockwise. Some manufacturers provide a door handle mounting bolt access hole to make it easier to remove the bolts.
Remove Outer Door Handle
Grab the lock assembly and handle and carefully lift it out of the door once the mounting bolts have been removed (make sure you store everything safely throughout this operation). You may need to twist it out a little to get it out, so be careful not to harm your car's paint in the process. You may also use masking tape to protect the paint by wrapping it all around and just below the handle.
Taking Out The Old Lock
To begin, remove the rod from the automobile door locks. The door handle assembly will be held in place by two bolts. Remove them using pliers but make a note of their location on the door rod before you remove them. After that, remove the door handle by opening the clip that holds it in place. You may now remove the lock itself. Remove the retaining clip using a pick or screwdriver until the lock is loose enough for it to be removed. Remove the old lock from the handle and wipe the cylinder with a cloth before replacing it.
New Car Lock Installation
Once the area is clean, you may replace the old lock with your new one. A new key will come with the replacement lock assembly you purchased. Place the new door lock on the front of the door now. Using the pliers, push the C-spring lockdown over the top of the new lock. Make sure it's securely fastened, and that the door lock rod is inserted into the door latch. Replace the clip and snap ring after sliding the new vehicle door locks into place and verifying they're in the right position.
Reinstall Handle
You may reinstall the handle into the automobile door now that the lock and all associated parts have been replaced. Replace the outside door handle, then attach the clip to keep it in place. You may require pliers to reinstall it, after which you should reattach the bolts and tighten them completely. Check to see if the door handle slides easily with the rod.
Reconnect Bolts And Rods
You'll need to replace all of the bolts and rods that you removed. Make that the new lock works once you've attached the control rods. Use a drop of oil if it seems to be moving slowly. Replace the inner door handle and fasten it with the plastic clip and the screwdriver on the handle. To make sure it's working properly, put it to the test, just like professional automotive locksmith service providers.
Reinstall Door Panel
Finally, replace the door panel. Press each one down firmly until the panel is fully inserted into the door. Return the speaker covers and armrest to their original positions. Carry on with the procedure for the remaining automobile door locks.
